Dear Members of the Yellow Bike Community,
This month marks the start of a crucial year for
the Yellow Bike Project. We have learned we
have only 1 year remaining in our current space and the city will not be
able to relocate us. To ensure we have a space that fits our needs a year from
now, we have begun a CAPITOL CAMPAIGN. This is a one-time push to raise funds
for the purchase of a workshop space and not the start of an annual donation
drive. Our goal is to obtain a permanent home, one that can serve our
organization and the community for years to come.
Over the next year we will continue to utilize our city-donated space to
its fullest potential. We are constantly expanding our volunteer base,
resulting in more shop hours, projects, and members of the community served. If
you love what we do and are interested in giving back, now is the time to get
involved. Over the next year we look forward to making the Yellow Bike
Community as strong as possible to deal with the challenges ahead.
So, once again, enjoy reading our monthly newsletter and staying up to date with
the latest news from the project. Thanks for the continued support.

CAPITOL CAMPAIGN FOR NEW
SPACE - The Yellow Bike Project is looking for a secure, permanent,
warehouse space so that we can continue the great work that we've been doing for
nearly 10 years. For over 8 years, our space has been generously donated by the
City of Austin; however, it is in an old airport building that is destined for
demolition in the ongoing Mueller Airport Redevelopment.
Over the last few months we have been in active discussion with the City about
the fate of our main shop on 51st street. We were hoping that the city might
be able to relocate us but have recently discovered there is no city space
currently available. While we remain open to working with the city, we have
decided to start raising funds to purchase a space of our own.
Our Main Shop is the heart of our organization and makes possible many of the
things we do. We have until late 2007 to find a new home for Yellow Bike. Our
ALL-VOLUNTEER organization is composed of people that are committed to a vision
of a bike friendlier Austin and a better world because of it. Other than
the workshop facility, we have few financial needs to carry on our work.
We are announcing a Capitol Campaign in which we hope to raise $300,000
to facilitate the purchase of a new space. While this sum might not be able to
replace our current facility in size, we feel that it would secure for us a home
that allows us to continue our current operations with room to grow.
Yellow Bike volunteers give a good deal of personal time to provide a service
that we feel greatly benefits Austin as a whole and gives many people the
resources they need to depend on their bicycles for transportation. We are
committed to providing this service and hope that the Yellow Bike community can
come together to help secure a home for the organization for years to come.
We feel lucky to have a year to make this goal a reality. We encourage anyone
who is interested in helping to get involved. It is the strength of our
volunteer base that will allow us to continue offering our shop services,
volunteer opportunities and raise the required funds to meet our goal.
Donations can be made in person during any of our shop hours, by mail, or
through our website. More information can be found on our
web site's donate page . Several alternate ways donate to Yellow Bike are
detailed in sections below and more will be available over the next year.
GIVE THE HOLIDAY GIFT OF
A DONATION TO YELLOW BIKE - Through our shop and several other stores and
bike shops around Austin we will have available donation "gift certificates" for
the Holidays. This is for someone you know who would love to benefit a local
cause rather than receive a gift for themselves. A
listing of shops offering these gift
donations will be available on our website.
IGIVE ONLINE HOLIDAY
SHOPPING TO BENEFIT YELLOW BIKE - As a project, we heavily emphasize
the re-use and recycling of resources. However, as individuals, we're all
likely to do some holiday shopping in the near future. Why not send a
percentage of your purchases back to organizations like Yellow Bike?
iGive.com
arranges deals with many large online merchants (dell, apple, expedia, target,
home depot...
click to view list) to give somewhere between 1% and 4%. So if you find
your self doing online shopping over the next month and beyond, check to see if
the merchant has an arrangement at iGive.
PEACOCK LOUNGE TO DONATE
10% SATURDAYS - Every Saturday night the
Peacock
Lounge will be donating 10% of its bar sales to Yellow Bike while DJ John
King spins the dance tunes. We kicked off the first of the Saturdays, October
28th with a successful Yellow Bike release at the Peacock. Thanks to the
Peacock and DJ John King for the continued support!
NEW HOURS: OUR FIRST
EVER SATURDAY MORNING SHOP - We have an exciting addition to our weekly
51st street shop schedule. There will be a Saturday morning shop from 10am -
2pm. We realize 6 - 10pm at night is not very kid or long day of work friendly
so we are excited about offering this weekend daytime shop. This month we will
have 5 Open Shops and 1 Volunteer Shop. So if your personal bike is in need of
repair this is your month. Please check the website for holiday closures.

CONCLUSION OF THE
BEDICHECK SCHOOL PROGRAM - The Citizen Schools program is going great
and both the 6th and 7th grade students and YBP volunteers are loving the
class. On Saturday December the 9th the class will conclude with a Bike Rodeo
at Bedichek Elementary. All children in the school have been invited to come
to the event and bring their bikes. The students who participated in the
after-school program will get to show off their new found skills and fix up
the bike of their class mates. There will be a bike safety demonstration by
the Austin Cycling Association to teach the kids the Do(s) and Don't(s) of
safe bike riding.
BIKES TO SCHOOLS DONATION - This school year's first Bikes to
Schools donation is at Austin Discovery School on Manor Rd. December 15th.
Thirty students will receive bikes along with helmets, locks and light sets,
thanks, in part, to a generous grant from REI. The students will also enjoy a
bicycle safety rodeo, thanks to ACA. If you're interested in working on bikes
for the donation, show up to any volunteer or open shop night shop at 51st
St. We recommend volunteer nights because the shop will be less crowded. If
you'd like to donate a used bike (we need all sizes), we take donations at
both locations, during open hours.
DECEMBER FAMILY OPEN HOUSE AND BIKE DRIVE - On Saturday, December
16th from 1-5 pm we will host a family open house and bike drive at our 51st
street shop. We will be offering shop tours and spotlighting the youth oriented
programs Yellow Bike helps to facilitate. Yellow Bike is involved in several
endeavors to promote cycling among youth in a holistic way which emphasizes
safety awareness, mechanics skills and cycling as
transportation. Representatives from the Tools for Life, Citizen Schools and
Bikes to Schools programs will be on hand to discuss their recent
accomplishments and their exciting plans for the coming year. The event will
also serve as a bike drive. We need used bikes of all sizes to serve as the
raw material for our upcoming kids programs.
NEW SATELLITE
SHOP LOCATION - Due to renovation, our satellite shop will soon be
moving from the Wheatsville Co-op on Guadalupe St. to
Treasure City Thrift located near 12th and Chicon (
map). We'd like to thank Wheatsville for their many years of support and
congratulate them on their store expansion. We'd also like to thank Treasure
City for stepping in and giving our shop a new home next to their new thrift
store. We're still running shops behind Wheatsville and the Treasure city space
is still in the planning and construction stages, so stay tuned for more
information about the upcoming shop transition.
YBP VOLUNTEER TO SIT ON
THE CITY'S BIKE SAFETY COUNCIL - The city is assembling a bike safety
council to advise the city council on bike safety in Austin. They have asked a
Yellow Bike representative to sit on the council. Tom Pekowski has agreed to be
our voice on the council. We applaud the establishment of the City's Bike
Safety Council as a positive step forward in involving the cycling community in
bike safety discussions and ultimately improving bike safety conditions here in
Austin.
WORK PARTIES FOR
NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER - November's work party was last Saturday, the
18th. We organized the bike yard and started work on the Treasure City
satellite shop. The date for the December work party is Sunday the 10th. For
December's work party, we will tidy the shop for the Family Open House and Bike
Drive happening the following weekend. Work parties are great because you get
to make Yellow Bike a little better while hanging out with some friendly folks.
We'd love to see you out there!
Benefit
As well as promoting a fun bike event FrankenBike organizers decided they could raise awareness for and financially benefit the Austin Yellow Bike Project and Bikes Across Borders. Both are non-profit bicycle organization in Austin, Texas.
Raising Funds
FrankenBike organizers will produce and sell $10 FrankenBike T-shirts and donate $1 to either Austin Yellow Bike Project or Bikes Across Borders for each FrankenBike T-shirt sold during FrankenBike Swap Meets. All funds raised will be donated directly at the end of each FrankenBike Swap Meet if either group will step up and ask for it if they want it.
Raising Awareness
Both Austin Yellow Bike Project and Bikes Across Borders are encouraged to attend FrankenBike Swap Meets or provide literature for event goers in an effort to promote their unique contributions to the bicycle community.
